End of 2011

I haven’t been inspired to post much since it got cold here and everything is hibernating for the winter. Today I saw The Big Picture’s 50 Best Photos from the Natural World.  The photos are beautiful and make me so thankful that we have such an amazing and diverse world to live in! As another year comes to a close, I can’t wait to have more adventures in 2012.

Dusk, Stockholm, Sweden

The moon at dusk in Stockholm turns me into a romantic.  I immediately thought of this poem by e. e. cummings:

i go to this window

just as day dissolves
when it is twilight(and
looking up in fear

i see the new moon
thinner than a hair)

making me feel
how myself has been coarse and dull
compared with you, silently who are
and cling
to my mind always

But now she sharpens and becomes crisper
until i smile with knowing
-and all about
herself

the sprouting largest final air

plunges
inward with hurled
downward thousands of enormous dreams

nat·u·ral·ist: a student of natural history; especially : a field biologist

I began looking up the names of flowers two years ago using an old edition of Petersen’s Field Guide to Wildflowers.  I marked in the margins when and where each plant was spotted and it became a sort of diary of memories of places I’ve been.  Finding the name for a plant and what family it belongs in is my way of appreciating and exploring the nature around me.  I inherited this from my mother, who has told me she inherits it from her grandparents.  We are naturalists.

I’m living in Sweden now where there is nature and wildlife around every corner.  The plants here are just slightly different from those I grew up around in New England and I want to take the time to find out what they are.  I don’t have a book to guide me or to hold my notes on what I’ve seen.  I hope this blog will serve as a diary of my explorations here and anywhere else I might end up.  Let the adventure begin!  Now all we need is spring to arrive…
